Cactushead, aka Ian Buchan, is a London-based DJ with a residency at the wildly popular Beefmince, held monthly at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. He will be performing at Beefmince at Brighton Bear Weekend on Saturday 15 June.
We asked him a few questions to find out what might be in store for you lucky bears on the night …
Hi, Ian! Could you please tell us a little about Beefmince, and your involvement with their incredibly popular parties?
Beefmince is a monthly party for bears, cubs, chubs, chasers and everyone in between that has been running for over three years at our spiritual home of the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. There’s as much emphasis on the beef as there is on the mince, which has helped us to build a loyal crowd of attitude-free beauties.
How long have you been DJing, and where else have you performed other than Beefmince?
I’ve been DJing for about fifteen years and have played at XXL, Brüt and great drag nights like Cybil’s House and Meth Lab. I’m proud to have played at the Black Cap and Her Upstairs, and miss those places so much. My fondest memory though is of running a super-friendly pie, mash and music night in Vauxhall many years ago.
You’ll be headlining at Beefmince at Brighton Bear Weekend this year. We can’t wait! What can we expect from you in your set?
I can’t tell you how stoked I am to be able to bring some our signature Beefy house beats to the seaside! You can expect plenty of new stuff and plenty of old stuff – we’re all about getting that perfect balance and providing an experience you don’t get anywhere else.
A little birdy tells me that you have created a special mix for Brighton Bear Weekend to give our visitors a flavour of your style …
I have – here it is![mixcloud https://www.mixcloud.com/cactushead/beefmince-brighton-bear-weekend-2019/ width=100% height=120 hide_cover=1]
Do you get to Brighton much? What do you think of our city?
I bloody love Brighton, it’s always been my favourite go-to place. I love all the independent cafés, bars and clubs – the scene is clearly thriving and that warms the heart. It’s my first time at Brighton Bear Weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens!
What else is on your plate at the moment? Any new or particularly exciting gigs coming up?
Yes, we have Boatmince on June 9th. Hundreds of beautiful bears partying on a boat down the Thames, what’s not to love? We did it last year and it was a complete blast – nothing like dancing your nips off while gliding under Tower Bridge!
What are your top tunes at the moment? Do you have a favourite guaranteed floor filler?
Hifi Sean has a quality earworm out at the moment called Love Is On The House. My partner in crime Silverhook has a new track called I Suppose which is a corker too. My favourite floor filler though is a Depeche Mode remix which people seem to go crazy for. It’s a closely-guarded secret and unShazamable. You’ll have to come along on the 15th to hear it!
Thanks, Ian – we can’t wait!
