Brighton Bear Weekend saddened by the passing Mx. Brighton Bear.

Antoni - Mx. Brighton Bear 2021

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of our very own Mx. Brighton Bear 2021, Antoni Fletcher-Goldspink.
Andrew was a contestant in last years’ Mr Brighton Bear competition and was leading the voting at the time they had to pull out due to their cancer diagnoses. As a non-binary bear Antoni not only embodied our values as an inclusive organisation, but also demonstrated how to live life to the fullest. They have a special place in our hearts and is sorely missed by the Brighton Bear Weekend production team, all our volunteers and, hundreds of his adoring fans.
We are sure Antoni’s next regeneration will be something even more special. We leave the last words to Antoni by including the responses they gave on their competition entry form last year.

Name: Antoni
Identifies as: Confused
Likes to play with: An etch a sketch and fuzzy felt.
Favourite position: The after pizza, eating across each other.
Something(s) not many people know: I’m a kiwi. I donated a kidney to my mum 24 years ago. I once danced around her handbag with Alison Goldfrapp and Bryan Ferry.

BBW present cheque to Brighton Rainbow Fund at volunteer event

posted in: news | 0

Brighton Bear Weekend (BBW) volunteers gathered last Saturday afternoon to present a cheque for £4,000 to the Brighton Rainbow Fund. The cheque, which represented the proceeds from the 2021 Bear Weekend was accepted by Maria Baker, a panel member and treasurer of the Brighton Rainbow Fund.

BBW 2022 Donation to Rainbow FundPresenting the cheque at Centre Stage bar, which will be ‘bear central’ for this year’s weekend, Graham Munday, chair of BBW said that “we are particularly delighted to be able to donate these funds, as until the middle of last year we had no idea whether we could run the Bear Weekend at all.   The fact that we managed to run the weekend at such short notice was a testament to the efforts of all our volunteers and talent who pulled together at the last minute to bring the event to life”.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Brighton Rainbow Fund, Maria said “we’re very grateful to the BBW team and their supporters for this donation, particularly given the restrictions and hurdles of the ever-changing Covid regulations last year.  Covid has caused problems across many communities, and Brighton’s LGBT+ community is no exception. These funds will help provide much-needed support, thank you!”

The event was also a chance for BBW volunteers old and new to get together over a drink and a buffet kindly provided by Centre Stage Bar and talk about how we plan to use our volunteers to help realise this year’s weekend.

Robbie Seaman, the Volunteer Manager for BBW, said “It was nice to see so many existing and new volunteers getting together in a relaxed environment.  As well as helping others, volunteering can be great way to meet new people, and as the whole BBW team are volunteers, you’ll benefit from being part of a really strong team”

Brighton Bears roar back into life!

posted in: news | 0

Brighton Bear Weekend 2022 is firmly back on the Brighton calendar, with this year’s Bear Weekend dates announced as 14th thru 17th July 2022.

Building on last year’s success, the main welcome event will commence in Dorset Gardens on the Friday evening at 5pm.

The legendary Garden Party will commence at mid-day on the Saturday, again in Dorset Gardens, and both events will feature a full bar, with Lunch Positive serving food on both the Friday and the Saturday for the first time. There’ll also be plenty of entertainment – more details to follow, but we are particularly excited about our first-of-a-kind international comedy cabaret we hope to be announcing shortly!

The Mr Brighton Bear competition will also be back, sponsored once again by Bear107 (bear107.com) so keep an eye out for announcements on how to enter!

Volunteer Meeting Saturday 12th March

As usual, all our events are run entirely by volunteers, and marshaling and managing a small army of them falls to our volunteer manager Robbie. If you’d like to volunteer this year, you can complete the brief web form by visiting brightonbearweekend.com/volunteer/ or just email Robbie at robbie@brightonbearweekend.com.

We’ll be holding our 2022 Volunteer kick-off meeting at Centre Stage on Saturday 12th March at 4.30pm.  All volunteers or potential volunteers are welcome, so please come along, meet the team, and find out how much fun volunteering can be!

If you’ve attended a Brighton Bear Weekend before, you’ll know it’s always great fun. As well as bears, cubs and even a stray otter or two, we welcome all friends of the community. The event always attracts furry (and not so furry) men and their friends from around the world so pop it in your diary now and don’t miss out!

Proceeds raised from the entire weekend (including profits from the sale of exclusive BBW merchandise) go to The Brighton Rainbow Fund, a charity that in turn channels funds to a range of local charities benefiting the LGBT+ community.

Graham Munday, Chair of Brighton Bear Weekend, said “We’re thrilled to be back, staging another live Brighton Bear Weekend hopefully without the sword of Covid hanging over us!  As always, the priority this year will be getting people out, having some fun in the sun, supporting each other, our venues, and the talent.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to what we hope will be a wonderful, safe, celebratory Brighton Bear Weekend!”
