DJ Bozzy Bear

Hello there! What’s your background, and how did you get started as a DJ?

When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was blessed with music-loving parents. I always experimented with mixing music, from old cassette decks to some second-hand record decks plugged into a two-channel mixer.

During the summer of 1988, I went to Ibiza, discovered acid house and watched the DJs work the crowds. When I got home, I bought my first pair of Technics decks and mixed away. I started playing house parties and recording mix tapes for friends. I also started experimenting in drum and bass, and loved the challenge of beat matching in different tempos.

After using CDs to DJ in the early 2000s, I discovered laptop mixing about ten years ago, although it was very primitive back then. I enjoy the greater opportunites for experimenting while mixing, and playing about with my favourite songs.

What are your musical influences?

Again, while growing up, I had an older brother who was listening not only to David Bowie, Queen and Pink Floyd but also Donna Summer, Sparks, and Hi-NRG and disco from Europe. All of these musical influences rubbed off on me, definitely. My mix tapes at school were very popular!

What can we expect from you at our Uproar club night during Brighton Bear Weekend?

This will be my fourth year playing at Envy on the Friday night of Brighton Bear Weekend. You can expect another exciting mix of dance tunes this year, including some new remixed 80s tunes.

I love playing at Envy, and look forward to seeing some new and familiar faces. Its always good to see a crowd of hairy men shaking their thing on the dance floor. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Thanks, Bozzy – we look forward to seeing you too!
